Product Transparency Standards

The following are the description of several transparency paths used for Owens Corning® products. The transparency certifications can be found at the UL Sustainable Product Database, Owens Corning’s Architectural & Engineering Information Center, Origin data base, mindful Materials, and Sustainable Minds Catalog.

Products Made with 100% Wind-Powered Electricity and Reduced Embodied Carbon

Owens Corning® signed power purchase agreements in 2015 which resulted in new wind capacity in Texas and Oklahoma, generating 1.1 million megawatt hours of electricity per year. The generated electricity enabled Owens Corning® to bring to the market, the first ever insulation products to have met the requirements of SCS Global Services’ certification protocol to validate that the electricity used to make them is 100% wind powered, which in turn, reduces their carbon footprint. The certified insulation products, made with 100% wind energy, gives architects and specifiers, builders, and even homeowners the option of lower-carbon products to build greener structures. For architects, the products will help them design buildings with reduced life cycle impact and achieve the recognized goals of the Architecture 2030 Challenge and U.S. Green Building Council’s LEED certification. A simple explanation of the certification and its benefits is also available through a supporting video.

The three types of insulation available for specification and purchase upon request are shown below. More products could be certified for specifications and purchase upon request.

  • EcoTouch® Insulation
  • Thermafiber® RainBarrier® Continuous Insulation
  • Unbonded Loosefill Insulation

Requests for and more information about these products should be directed to sustainability@owenscorning.com. For information about the third-party verification process, please visit www.scsglobalservices.com.

Environmental Product Declaration (EPD)

An EPD is an independently verified and registered document that communicates transparent information about a product’s environmental impacts throughout its life cycle. Owens Corning® issued the first North American EPD for fiberglass insulation in November 2012, followed by the first North American extruded polystyrene (XPS) foam insulation EPD in November 2013. EPD’s of all core building products were certified and issued by UL Environment by the end of 2015. The certified EPDs can be found at the UL Sustainable Product Database or at Owens Corning’s Architectural & Engineering Information Center.

UL GREENGUARD and GREENGUARD Gold

UL GREENGUARD Certification ensures that a product has met some of the world's most rigorous and comprehensive standards for low emissions of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) into indoor air.

The UL GREENGUARD Gold standard includes health based criteria for additional chemicals and also requires lower total VOC emissions levels to ensure that products are acceptable for use in environments such as schools and healthcare facilities. UL GREENGUARD Gold Certified products must also comply with requirements of the State of California's Department of Public Health "Standard Method for the Testing and Evaluation of Volatile Organic Chemical Emissions from Indoor Sources Using Environmental Chambers, Version 1.1 (2010)" (also known as California Section 01350).

USDA BIOBASED

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) biobased labeling initiative is an element of the U.S. Farm Bill that focuses on increasing the purchase and use of biobased products made from renewable agricultural materials. The purpose of the labeling initiative is to more clearly identify biobased products for all buyers, and to promote the increased sale and use of biobased products in the commercial market and for consumers. In order to be certified by the USDA, vendor products are required to undergo biobased product testing by an accredited laboratory. Owens Corning’s EcoTouch® insulation is the first fiberglass insulation to be certified and listed in the USDA's BioPreferred® Program Catalog and eligible for preferred federal purchasing.

Owens Corning® products in the USDA's BioPreferred® Program Catalog are listed in the category of Minor Construction under Insulation, and Loosefill and Batts.

Cradle to Cradle Material Health Certification (MHC)

Owens Corning® embarked on Material Health Certifications (MHC), the first in the industry, to aid architects and designers in choosing products that are safe for human and environmental health.
