THE SIGNIFICANCE OF NUMBER 108
The number 108 has been significant since ancient times.
In practicing mantras it is important to do them 108 times. This is thought to be more powerful than doing them 107 or 109 times. So, with sets of 108 repetitions, mantras are powerful.
The Hindu, Buddhist, Jain, Sihk, Islamic & Taoist religions all use a string of prayer beads that have 108 beads or knots. The Christian rosary also derives from these bead systems with 54 beads- not counting the tail.
The roots of 108 are 9 & 12. The number 9 is also significant in that it is the number of digits in our decimal system (not counting zero).
12 may be the most significant of all numbers and is the basis of the phenomena sometimes called "the law of Octaves". This law & others have been referred to in ancient writings and traditions such as Tantra, Alchemy, Hermetic magic, Qabala & shamanic rituals.
For some reason energy often subdivides in divisions of twelve. 12 is the number that appears over and over in many contexts, in many cultures, throughout history. Some of the more common contexts are:
12 months of the year
12 signs of the zodiac
12 Gods in the Greek pantheon
12 Apostles surrounding Jesus
12 notes in an octave
There are many more examples. It is just the natural way energy divides itself, in a variety of forms.
The number 108 also comes up in a variety of contexts. There are 54 letters in the Sanskrit alphabet and each letter has a masculine/feminine aspect. So, 54 x 2 = 108.
Another context is the geometrical configuration known as the Sri Yantra. There are points where 3 lines intersect. There are 54 such intersections and each intersection has masculine/feminine qualities, again we have 108.
There are said to be 108 marmas, energy intersections in the human body. Also 108 main energy lines or nadis that radiate from the heart chakra. Thus the number 108 relates to the Sri Yantra (a geometric configuration) as well as to the human body.
The diameter of the sun is 108 times the diameter of the earth. In astrology, there are 12 houses and 9 planets.
In the Krishna tradition 108 comes up often.
The ancient mystics held the number 108 in high esteem. They would say that the number 108 is in sync with the rhythms of time and space.
When we use 108 repetitions in mantras or in T'ai Chi, we are saluting the order of the universe and aligning our intentions with the divine will. Said another way, we are harmonizing our personal vibrations with the natural vibrations of creation.
