Promises Made

God makes promises to his people. Promises of blessing, land, descendants, and of his presence. God promises Noah and his family that God will never again destroy the earth in response to humanity’s corruption. God promises Abraham blessings of land and descendants as numerous as the stars. In this covenant, God sets up the promise that God will one day be the God not only of a man and a family, but of a nation, and one day of all nations. God promises Joseph, although implicitly, that God will always be present with Joseph, even in his darkest hours.

Embedded in all of these promises is the possibility, which becomes a reality in Jesus Christ that the promises are meant for all nations and all people. Even though God chose to make God’s self known through the nation of Abraham’s descendants, the fulfillment of God’s inheritance is for all. Even in the covenant made to Abraham, God blessed Abraham so that he would be a blessing to the world.

God consistently makes promises to his people in the forms of covenants, actions, and presence. Even though people consistently fail to live up to our end of the agreement, God never fails to live up to God’s.

All Creation/All Nations

God’s promises are for all people and for all nations. God chose Abraham’s descendants to be the vehicles through which God’s blessings would be delivered, and in the blessing of Jesus Christ, all people were given the gift of inheritance of God’s kingdom.
