One of Wisconsin’s largest state parks, Governor Dodge, will soon be home to a new and improved oasis for equestrians. Tucked away in the rocks, meadows, and rolling hills of the state, 25 miles of horse trails offer riders and non-riders alike a scenic getaway.
There exists currently a temporary spot for campers to keep their horses, but Sandy Rogers with the Friends of Governor Dodge equestrian committee cites a number of issues. Of these are limited shade, no amenities, and tight spacing. The campsite is also built on a slant, forcing visitors to build up their tires to stay level.
A large, spacious area will be home to the new campground, complete with hookups, extra privacy, and extra space for horses.
To collect money for the new site, the equestrian committee hosted a poker ride and silent auction. Their next event will be concessions at the Red Barn Blues at Shepard’s Barn in Columbus on July 28. The event will be from 4-7, including music, horse demos, and exhibits. Donations make up a generation portion of their funds, which can be given at govdodgeequestrians.com.
A whopping $657,000 was the initial price tag for the campground, a goal that hasn’t yet been met. The Friends of Governor Dodge equestrian committee still needs community help to make this dream a reality. Ground breaking is hoped to take place in 2020.
