Subject:                          Champions' Challenge

Dan,

Here's a quick rundown of today's Champions' Challenge.  I left home at 7:30 this morning, for the 1:45 trip to the course.  I think Droz and Paul said their ride was about 45 minutes.  They got there before me and found out that there was about an hour frost delay which was a bit of an issue because Paul was on a pretty tight schedule in order to get home this afternoon and then to Lisa's parents' for Passover festivities.  They pushed things along, so we actually teed off about 45 minutes after our scheduled time.  It was a nice course.  I've been trying to think of a comparison in Myrtle Beach, but haven't really been able to come up with anything.  I suppose it wouldn't be too different from Cranberry Highlands.  The tees we chose were already fairly short (just over 6,000 yards, but a Par 71), but I think the tees were moved up even more on most of the holes, so they were even shorter.  Longest Par 4 might have been 360 and one of the Par 5's was actually 420 (more on that hole in a minute).  But it was pretty windy, so that was a factor on most holes.  Greens were quick and undulating.  I 4-putted twice and Droz 4-putted once (yes, you read that correctly... 4-putted!!!!)  Got put with a guy, who spent most of the day annoying Droz (Paul and I rode together).  This guy knew everything about the course and just about any other topic and told Droz most of these things.  Anyway, Droz duffed his opening drive, which pretty much summarized his round.  Droz can correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think he had a legitimate birdie putt all day.  I had one.  Not much to report until the 460 yard Par 5 6th hole.  I hit a decent drive and had 235 to the green.  Despite our new friend telling us it wasn't worth it to go for it (because of how tight it was around the green), Paul and I did.  Paul put his shot deep in the woods.  I put mine about 10 yards short of the green (maybe 20 yards from the pin), so all I needed to do was get up and down for the bird.  Proceeded to hit the chip too hard and through the green.  Chipped back on the green and 2 putted for bogey.  Next came the 250 yard Par 4 8th hole.  It was different then our favorite driveable Par 4, because you couldn't really see the green.  For some reason, I didn't think you could drive it, so I layed up with a 5 iron.  Droz hammered his drive that we thought was right of the green, but turned out going over the green directly in line with the pin.  Paul also hammered a drive, that we thought was pretty good, but weren't sure.  Turned out, Paul's drive ended up in the middle of the green about 25 feet from the hole.  Not the easiest putt in the world (especially for the Rover).  Pretty much all downhill on some pretty quick greens.  In fact, when Paul hit it, Droz groaned, thinking he hand't hit it hard enough.  It was a good putt and ended up less then 2 feet from the hole.  I was going to give it to Paul, but he knocked it in anyway for the bird.  Paul was at it again on the Par 4 12th hole.  He hit a pretty terrible pop-up drive into a fairway bunker.  But the hole was pretty short so he only had 150 to the green.  He had a pretty bad lie in the bunker and told me he didn't think he had any chance of getting it to the green, but he went for it anyway.  He actually made good contact and it looked like his ball was a little left of the green.  The green was in a little valley, so you could only see the top of the pin.  When we got to the green, Paul's ball was about 8 feet away.  Clearly, he'd gotten a good kick off of a hill and was set up for a birdie opportunity.  ANother pretty tough putt, that Paul actually appeared to stab, but somehow found the cup for his second bird.  Two holes later was Paul's mulligan birdie.  I think we all hit our first shots into the drink and decided to hit again.  Paul stuffed his second to 4 feet and made the mulligan birdie putt.  Very little to report after that.  I had the 8 footer or so that Droz sent you video of. Actually hit it well, but just a little off line. The 17th hole was a Par 5 that was only 468 on the card.  The tees were moved up. so it was only 420.  On the tee, we all thought it was silly, because we were all going to birdie it.  Paul made 7, I made 8 and Droz made 9.

I shot 92 with 39 putts!!!!!  Paul shot 95 with 2 birdies and 36 putts.  I believe Droz shot 96.

Obviously, Paul was the only one to make a positive statement.  He is using a piece of crap putter that I think is from 1965 that looks like a putt-putt putter that someone gave to Paul's Dadand he gave to Paul.  I think Arnold Palmer used something similar.  I guess I shouldn't criticize since Paul did make 2.5 birdies, but I wouldn't exactly say that Paul's putting has improved dramatically with his new putter.

Droz made a different kind of statement... lokking like a guy that hasn't played in abot 6 months.  There were glimpses of the Droz we know and love, but it remains to be seen if he can put it together in 6 weeks.

I would say my round was pretty typical.  6 pars, an 8 and 2 7's and, as previously mentioned, 2 4-putts.  Just couldn't find that 1 birdie I usually manage to get.

P.S.  Odds might come out some time this weekend.  Talked to a buddy of mine in Vegas, and he said the oddsmakers at The Flamingo were still analyzing today's round.
