ICC is a nontraditional college serving the Yankton Sioux Reservation and local community. The Ihanktonwan Community College was established for the purposes of providing higher educational opportunities on the Yankton Sioux Reservation. The college operates as a branch institute of Sinte Gleska University and provides accredited courses approved by the North Central Association of Colleges Higher Learning Commission.

The college is open to anyone wanting to enroll regardless of race, gender, religious status, political affiliation or other. ICC offers both Associate of Arts and Bachelor of Arts/Science Degrees in various areas to include Business Administration, Human Service, Education, and other vocational technology areas.

The strength of the college is its location, which is close to home where students are able to maintain homes, strong family support, and attend class in a meaningful cultural environment. The college strives to keep the cost of education affordable. Most students obtain twenty-four credit hours per year at an estimated cost of $4900 for the year. Often students obtain core courses before transferring to other colleges and universities. All course taken at ICC are accredited courses by the Higher Learning Commission and are transferrable to any college or university in the area or country.
